The first malaria vaccine approved by the EMA

It is the first vaccine in the world that offers partial protection against malaria.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) gave a favourable opinion for the only vaccine that can protect against these disease transmitted through mosquitoes. The agency advised the use of the vaccine for children in Africa, because they pose the greatest risk of infection.

Mosquirix is produced by pharmaceutical group GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in partnership with PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative. According to Reuters, this will be the only malaria vaccine marketed under license and it is expected to show promising results in countries where it will be used.

The World Health Organization (WHO) will review the product, will offer an instruction guide and also, adding a list of regions where it will be used.
